A PR gaffe for Tesco?

Following the horsemeat scandal Tesco today pledges that from now on it will sell meat from ‘closer to home.’ Pick of the news

This is after a National Farming Union found unsurprisingly 78% of people want more British food in supermarkets.

But is this pledge going to do Tesco any good?

Speaking to the BBC Head of Tesco Philip Clarke said he could not guarantee ‘right now today’ that all of Tesco’s products contained exactly what was on the label, but ‘that is our objective.’ He went on to say that from July all chicken sold in its UK stores would be from British farms (before he flagged this up, I thought they already were…)

As a publicist, I can’t help thinking someone could have helped Mr Clarke put this a better way.

Unfortunately as a customer this isn’t what I want to hear. I appreciate Mr Clarke is just trying to be honest but as he is confirming I can’t trust what the label says at Tesco, I will be going elsewhere…

  1. The dilemma is that if he’d absolutely guaranteed the labels were accurate, and then it was found they were not, he would been in even deeper trouble.
Better probably to have pledged Tesco were taking all possible steps to ensure that labels were accurate …

    1. I agree. From a PR point of view, it would have been better to have pledged Tesco were taking all possible steps…!
