A new poll this week reveals that we’re a nation of ‘Darlings’, ‘Babes’ and ‘Loves’. The top ten league-table of romantic nicknames has been compiled by the charity initiative, Adopt a Word, which asked 1000 Brits to admit to the gooey pet-names they use for their loved ones. Two thirds of adults in the UK confess to regularly using soppy monikers.
The top ten UK romantic pet-names in full are:
1. Darling
2. Babe/Baby
3. Love
4. Sweetheart
5. Gorgeous
6. Honey/Hun/Honeybunch
7. Sweetie/Sweetie pie/Sweets
8. Angel
9. Sugar/Sugarplum
10. Boo
Failing to make the grade after being picked by just 1% of people was the cheesy, Muffin and sickly-sweet, Treacle.
“The diverse top ten proves that what can be a toe-curlingly embarrassing nickname to one person, may make someone else turn to jelly and go weak at the knees,” comments Patricia Adiele of Adopt a Word, “but, with Valentine’s Day around the corner and women gearing up for Leap Year proposals, we think February should be the month that these special, romantic words are celebrated.”
With Adopt a Word, for just £15, any romantic name or word, real or made-up, can be added to the Adopt a Word website and ‘adopted’ for a loved-one to mark Valentine’s Day or any tender occasion such as engagements, anniversaries or birthdays.
The best thing about this gift is that all the money raised goes to I CAN, the children’s communication charity. 1.2 million children in the UK suffer with speech, language and communication needs. I CAN work to ensure these children get the help and support they need so they can live happy and successful lives.
